Med School - First Test
First of all, a quick description of what test day is like in med school... a four hour written test (covering material from four different classes all at once), a lunch break, and then a one hour lab practical (identification of slides, tissue samples, cell types, and tagged structures on cadavers, among other things). I survived, and I ended up in the top half of my class - so good news there (We don't have an cumulative listing right now, but I'm somewhere around ~40ish out of 118). One of my tests, I got an 81% and that gave me a class ranking of 35, to give a frame of reference for difficulty level.

Other than TONS of studying, med school is going well. I have finally figured out my way around the school (or at least to the lecture hall, library and labs), I have gotten used to the smell of formaldehyde (yay for cadaver lab), I have discovered I love scrubs (it's like wearing jammies and still you still look respectable), and have kinda figured out how I need to study to cover all the material thrown at us (basically all the time, not quite... but it feels like it sometimes, and the week before the test, that really is the truth). And now I have a month until the next test (Oct 14th) to start this mess all over again. Wish me luck! (But I can't lie, I'm loving it)

Kaira's recent accomplishments

  • Aug 29th - tied her own shoes for the first time! (the first in her class to be able to do this)
  • Sep 16th - counted to 100 all by herself!
  • Sept 22nd - became a "Money Master" at school. The kids have to be able to identify each coin and be able to tell how much it is worth (A nickel is worth 5 cents, etc). When they are able to do this without help, they earn the title of "money master"

Her awards for being able to tie her shoes, and for being a Money Master...
The third picture is of her behavior chart at school. They get a sticker for good behavior everyday, and she was the first in her class to fill hers all the way up (and I think she earned a bonus sticker for something the day she was bringing it home - that's the extra one stuck in there at the top).

    Kaira's new playhouse
This is STILL a work in progress... thanks to all the rain from Hurricane Gustav and test week rolling around, I have not been able to get much done on it. I finished shingling the roof and got one more wall up, and hopefully will get more done over this weekend.

Kaira is loving school. She wakes up every morning looking forward to it. In fact, she is actually sad on the weekends when I tell her that we aren't going to school today.

    Kaira's Art Gallery
Both projects from school, and those created at home...

A 3D piece of art from folded and glued paper... a 3D structure with painted toilet paper rolls to make the Golden Gate bridge (during the letter G week)...

A picture from her daily 'journaling' they do at school... a picture of her family ("mommy, me and daddy")... a worksheet her teacher made for her to practice writing her name...

A picture of the "Garden of Eden"... a drawing of her "helping hand with a heart" (during letter H week)... a picture of houses (also during H week)

A new thing Kaira likes to do when coloring... draw a big squiggly line that covers the whole paper, then color in each little section a different color...

An art project from school "I'm so glad God made..." then they each had to fill in the blank (one boy in the class said sprinkle donuts!)... A picture of Kaira and Lokei (Lokei has the green eyes, of course)... A picture of the new kitty at Daddy's house - all the hearts are because she loves him so much :)

And a picture of the artist at work...

    Playing at the park
There is a park on the way home that we stop at a lot of the time after school, especially if the weather is nice. It has a nice playground and lots of tables... so I can set up at one of the tables to study while Kaira runs around on the playground. These were pictures from one such day.

The first one she was kicking her soccer ball around with a new 'friend' she made... the second picture, she's being a monkey - she shimmied her way up the pole... the last picture, she's going across the monkey bars (she's gotten pretty good at this)...

    The school playground
One day after school, instead of going to the park, we stayed at school so Kaira could play on the playground there because a classmate of hers, Timothy, was doing the same. This is the playground they usually play on during recess.

Trying to balance on the tires... hanging upside down on the bars... on the pole - she isn't sliding down - she climbed up there! She loves to climb and has gotten really good at it

Kaira and Timothy climbing on the tires...

A couple pictures of the playground itself (it's pretty nice - I wish I had one like this at school as a kid!)

    One more...
This picture reminds me of the Cat in the Hat (which happens to be one of her favorite books right now)... "It was too cold to go out. It was too wet to play. So they sat in the house on that cold, cold, wet day..."
